About Us
Hi, My name is John Byrne. I'm a Florida attorney, and prior to founding SinkTeam I represented over 500 homeowners with sinkhole damage. In working with so many clients, I discovered that many are frightened of the sinkhole testing process, unsure of their options, and often need professional, experienced help with their sinkhole problems.
That's why I decided to start SinkTeam. We are licensed and bonded Sinkhole Public Adjusters - not a law firm (SinkTeam doesn't provide lawyer services so there's no attorney-client relationship and no need to charge expensive attorney's fees and costs!). SinkTeam specializes in assisting homeowners – and never insurance companies – with damage to their homes caused by sinkhole activity.
Few homeowners have ever filed an insurance claim in their lives, much less have experience with sinkhole homeowners insurance. The insurance companies sinkhole insurance adjusters, however, deal with dozens of new sinkhole claims every day. Sinkhole insurance company adjusters know how to protect their clients (the insurance companies) and some of them look for excuses to deny and underpay valid sinkhole insurance claims. Homeowners may accidentally slip up and say things that can ultimately harm their sinkhole claim or give the insurance company an excuse to deny the sinkhole claim out right.
Sinkhole insurance claims are even more difficult than most other insurance claims because of the complex and scientific nature of sinkhole geology. Every home for which a sinkhole claim has been filed must undergo extensive and invasive scientific testing to determine if sinkhole activity (that is, the movement of soils below a home) is occurring and causing damage to a home. Sinkhole damage is often first spotted as cracks in the home, and they can progress and grow larger.
Because sinkhole damage is so extensive and difficult to pinpoint, sinkhole repairs often run into the hundreds of thousands of dollars. Insurance companies naturally look to minimize their costs, and it isn’t uncommon for insurance companies to deny sinkhole activity exists when it clearly does, and even to “lowball” claim damages to keep costs low.
Often, this behavior is not in the homeowner’s best interest.
That’s where SinkTeam’s sinkhole public adjusters come in. John Byrne founded SinkTeam after working as a Florida lawyer to represent hundreds of Florida homeowners with sinkhole problems. After seeing so many sinkhole claims close up and working to help so many families, John founded SinkTeam in the summer of 2009.

SinkTeam is a public adjusting and insurance consulting company specializing in representing Florida homeowners experiencing cracking and damage to their homes possibly caused by sinkhole activity. Founded by Florida attorney John Byrne in 2009, SinkTeam is dedicated to helping homeowners recover from the painful, costly and frightening impact that sinkholes and sinkhole activity cause. Led by John Byrne, SinkTeam’s Florida licensed and bonded public adjusters represent only homeowners – never insurance companies! As a sinkhole lawyer who represented over 500 homeowners in sinkhole disputes with their insurance companies, John saw first-hand how difficult sinkhole insurance claims can be for homeowners to deal with – and how much insurance companies fight to make the sinkhole insurance claims process as long, drawn out and painful as possible for the homeowner. Homeowners typically hire an attorney long after the claim had begun, and John worked to fix many costly and delaying mistakes made accidentally by unknowing homeowners, and John was frustrated at the poor treatment homeowners received when they attempted to file claims on their own.
John saw a need for experienced sinkhole professionals to provide assistance to homeowners damaged by sinkhole activity, but at a fee much lower than virtually every attorney charges. He resigned his job at a very successful sinkhole law firm and formed SinkTeam to assist homeowners during the claim process – ensuring that the sinkhole claims process is handled properly, timely and fairly. SinkTeam’s experienced sinkhole public adjusters work hard for the homeowner to minimize any delays caused by insurance companies, to ensure the insurance companies uphold all their legal and ethical obligations, and SinkTeam works to ensure the homeowner is treated in a professional, fair and honest manner by his or her homeowner’s insurance company.
Sinkhole attorneys are very expensive! They typically charge one-third (33 and 1/3%) of any money they recover as their attorney fees. That doesn’t sound like much at first, until you start to think about it. One-third of $150,000 is $50,000 – and that’s a lot of money – sometimes homeowners were left without enough money to complete repairs after paying their lawyer fees, when perhaps they didn’t need a lawyer in the first place.
SinkTeam is not a law firm, SinkTeam does not provide any lawyer services, and SinkTeam does not charge lawyer fees! SinkTeam is a sinkhole public adjusting company licensed by the State of Florida and operating in full compliance with all Florida statutes. Since SinkTeam is not a law firm and doesn’t provide lawyer services, SinkTeam charges much less than a lawyer for sinkhole consulting! In fact, SinkTeam’s fees are only 10% of the money SinkTeam helps recover – a lot less than what a lawyer would charge!
